In the Plaza de España, we find Las Gradas de la Olma.
History of the Olma.
Back in the 14th century, elms and poplars were planted and the banks of the stream were transformed into orchards. Its bridges were built to access the orchards and, little by little, the population moved towards the valley and trees were cut down and the first houses and corrals were built.
In the center the Elm was enthroned, like a Totem, revered by all...
It was said that one of its branches reached the tower of the Church, even some sources estimate that it was 800 years old, it would be from the 12th century, the official date of the foundation of the population center.
La Olma witnessed of the history of Colmenar del Arroyo, the secrets told under it, the decisions of the council, shelter for games and social gatherings, refuge for shepherds and first-time lovers, rest for peasants, grandparents in the hot summer afternoons and pedestrians in general.
"... On October 18, 1978, an air carried the elm ahead, all the old, young and child beehives were crying at their feet, because the elm had fallen. The heart of the elm was divided into pieces and each One of the families of Colmenar del Arroyo kept part of it in their homes as a souvenir.
Shortly after, old Olma was burned and her ashes were part of the air that surrounds Colmenar. There are times when the wind brings the aroma that it left when it died from the fire, reminding the Colmenareños of the greatness and splendor of their Olma ”.
There are still people who keep a piece of bark as if it were a relic!
